What the Standard Variable Tariff is

It’s Good Energy’s variable supply tariff for electricity and/or gas. Prices can move over time (with proper notice) instead of sitting locked for a fixed term.

Think of it as the flexible way to get their renewable credentials without committing to a Fix.

What you still get

Flexibility doesn’t mean dropping the green bit:

  • 100% renewable-matched electricity
  • Greener gas option with ~10% biogas and Gold Standard offsets
  • Works with smart and standard meters
  • Variable pricing that can change with the market

The big practical advantage: meters

Unlike Fix, EV and Heat Pump tariffs, SVT works with smart or standard meters. If a smart meter isn’t possible yet, this is still a clean way onto Good Energy.

When I’d point someone to SVT

I’d suggest it if you:

  • Don’t want a fixed exit-fee style commitment right now
  • Still have a traditional meter
  • Might move to EV or Heat Pump tariffs once life (or kit) changes
  • Want to join now and decide on a fix later

The referral still applies

Starting on SVT still counts. Join through my referral link so eligible new customers can access the shared £50 credit after supply takeover and first direct debit under Good Energy’s terms.

My take

SVT is the low-friction entry: renewable matching, greener gas available, fewer barriers. Start here if you need flexibility — then graduate to Fix, EV or Heat Pump when the fit is obvious.

Referral note: The £50 credit is for eligible new Good Energy customers who switch via the personalised link. Credit is applied after supply takeover and first direct debit, as account credit only, at Good Energy’s discretion.

FAQs

Can prices go up on SVT?

Yes. Variable tariffs can change. You’ll get notice under their terms and the rules that apply.

Can I move from SVT to an EV tariff later?

Usually yes, if you become eligible and the tariff is available for your area.

Is SVT a bad deal compared with Fix?

Not inherently. It’s a different trade-off: flexibility versus locked rates. Pick for your situation, not internet folklore.
