Why I talk about panels and a battery together

Panels make power when the sun’s out. Most of us use a lot of electricity in the evening. Without storage, surplus often goes out to the grid for a modest export rate — then you buy it back later at a higher import rate.

A battery flips that: store your own generation for later, shave peak imports, and get more value from the roof you already paid to equip.

How Good Energy approaches it

Quotes should always be survey-based. Roofs, shading, loft space, electrics and how you use power all change the numbers. Treat website starter prices as a conversation starter, not a promise.

Export rates and keeping one supplier

If you export surplus, the rate matters. Good Energy offers export options for customers on their supply, and higher exclusive rates can apply when they (or an approved partner) install the system.

Rates and rules change, so check current Tariff Information Labels. The principle I care about: solar + battery + a supplier that takes renewables seriously usually beats “cheap panels, random tariff”.

Who I’d nudge toward a survey

It’s usually worth a proper look if you:

  • Have a usable roof and limited heavy shading
  • Are home in the day — or happy to shift flexible loads
  • Might add an EV or heat pump (more annual kWh to cover)
  • Want import, export and kit under fewer different relationships

My take

Solar plus battery isn’t mandatory for everyone. But if your roof works and your bills (or your EV/heat-pump plans) justify it, pairing generation with Good Energy’s renewable supply is one of the more coherent setups I can recommend.

Do I need Good Energy supply to have solar?

No — but their export options and joined-up service are often stronger when you’re also on their import supply.

Will a battery wipe out my bill?

Almost never for a normal home. It reduces imports and helps you time usage. You’ll usually still buy some power from the grid.
